Welcome to the International Division
Mary E. Nitsch, Director of International Affairs
Mission Statement:
The International Division for Maryland's Office of the Secretary of State will foster global awareness and increase
the level and consistency of open dialogue and exchange between Maryland's citizens and institutions and their international
counterparts.

Maryland and Anhui, China Celebrate 30
Years of Friendship: Secretary of State
John P. McDonough, center, visited Anhui Province China in early September
2010 to honor the 30th anniversary of the Sister State partnership between
the regions. Secretary McDonough met with
Anhui Deputy Governor Hua Jianhui. The Secretary was accompanied on the
business and trade
mission by representatives from 20 small and medium size Maryland companies.
The International Division focuses its attention on two special areas:
The award-winning Maryland Sister States Program. Chaired by the Secretary of State, steered by a devoted
and spirited Advisory Board of Directors, and staffed by an army of citizen volunteers, the Sister States Program was established
in 1980 to provide a forum for the promotion of international cooperation and understanding. Learn more about each of our ten
relationships by clicking on the links to the right. If you would like more information regarding the benefits of the Sister States
Program, please click here.
